Christoph “Chris” Lehmann, MD, is an Associate Professor in Pediatrics, Dermatology, Health Information Sciences, and Nursing at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the Director for Clinical Information Technology for the Children’s Medical and Surgical Center. He is the co-chair of the committee charged with the deployment of electronic documentation throughout the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

A clinically active neonatologist, Dr. Lehmann completed a two-year fellowship in Applied Medical Informatics supported by a grant from the National Library of Medicine in 2000. Most of his efforts focus on clinical informatics.  A member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Society for Pediatric Research, Dr. Lehmann served as education chair for the Council on Clinical Information Technology at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and as chair of the Student Working Group at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). He also served on the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology’s Records Working Group. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the AMIA, where he helped to define the training requirements for a medical informatics subspecialty, and on the Partnership for Policy Implementation committee at the AAP. Dr. Lehmann is the chair of the Working Group Steering Committee for the AMIA and leads the effort for an AMIA-wide mentorship program.

Dr. Lehmann is one of the editors of eNeonatal Review (www.eneonatalreview.org) and is a founder of Dermatlas (www.dermatlas.org). He serves as the chair of the Continuing Medical Education Advisory Board at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has extensive experience with Web-based clinical simulations for medical education and is one of the original authors of “The Interactive Patient: A Multimedia Interactive Educational Tool on the World Wide Web.”

Dr. Lehmann is the principal investigator on a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) on medication monitoring for underserved populations using information technology. He received a citation for Distinguished Services Rendered from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and in 2006 the Best Practice in Health-System Pharmacy Award from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Dr. Lehmann’s interests and research have focused on issues related to computer-assisted medical education as well as improving safety through medical informatics applications. He has authored over 40 publications and several book chapters. He is one of the editors of a book in preparation on pediatric informatics. His current work includes the development and evaluation of Web-based applications that reduce provider errors.

Dr. Bancalari is a Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology and the Director of the Division of Neonatology at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. He also serves as the Chief of Newborn Service at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Bancalari received his undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of Chile. Dr. Bancalari did his internship and pediatric residency at the Luis Calvo Mackenna and El Salvador Hospitals in Santiago, Chile. In addition, he has completed fellowships in respiratory disease and physiology, respiratory rehabilitation, and pediatric cardiology.

Dr. Bancalari is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. He sits on a number of editorial boards, including the Journal of Perinatal Medicine, Neonatology, Perinatal-Neonatal Medicine, and Acta Pediatrica Española and serves as a reviewer for over a dozen journals. Dr. Bancalari has published over 200 books, book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and other original works. He is a member of numerous national and international organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the American Thoracic Society, the European Society for Pediatric Research, the American Board of Pediatrics, the Sub-Board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and National Heart, Lung, Blood Instute (NHLBI) External Advisory Committee Collaborative Program on Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD).

The recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Bancalari has been honored with the University of Miami School of Medicine Dean’s Research Award for Career Achievement, the Project Newborn Distinguished Chair in Neonatology, the Duane Alexander Award for Academic Leadership in Perinatal Medicine, and the Virginia Apgar Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. He lectures extensively worldwide.
Dr. Bancalari has participated in multiple research projects funded by the National Institues of Health (NIH). His research interests include neonatal respiratory physiology, control of breathing, and lung injury, and are aligned with his clinical specialties of neonatal intensive care and respiratory diseases of the newborn.

Dr. Durand is the Director of the Division of Neonatology and the Medical Director of the NICU-PICU Research Group at Children’s Hospital Research Center in Oakland, California he received a BS in biology, summa cum laude, from the University of San Francisco and his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.  Relocating to California to complete an internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital Oakland, he then completed a fellowship in neonatology at the Mt. Zion Hospital Medical Center in San Francisco.

Dr. Durand’s expertise is in the management of newborn respiratory failure, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for newborns and pediatric patients, cerebral cooling for the treatment of newborn hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) brain injury, and multicenter clinical trials of novel therapies in critically ill infants and children.  The recipient of many grants, his current areas of research include late surfactant instillation to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) to prevent chronic lung diseases, vitamin D levels in mothers and newborn infants, interaction of maternal and infant factors in growth of VLBW infants, meropenem pharmacodynamics, erythropoietin (EPO) and HIE. He is also interested in mechanical ventilation, particularly high-frequency, and the prevention of BPD.

Dr. Durand is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (and serves on the perinatal pediatrics section) and a member of the National Perinatal Association, the Society for Critical Care Medicine, the American Thoracic Society, and the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. In California, he is the current Vice President of the California Association of Neonatologists, a Director of the Regional Perinatal Program of California, and a member of the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC). At Oakland Children’s Hospital, he co-chairs the ICN Respiratory Therapy QI Committee and chairs the medical Staff Information Services Advisory Committee.

Dr. Durand has published numerous articles, abstracts, and book chapters and lectures extensively.

Dr. Jobe is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of Perinatal Biology at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Stanford
University, Phi Beta Kappa, with a BS in Biology. He then received MD and PhD degrees at the University of California, San Diego where he completed a pediatric residency and fellowship in neonatology.

Dr. Jobe was instrumental in the FDA approval of surfactant for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome.

His research interest is in surfactant homeostasis in the adult lung, lung injury, and lung development.  Presently he is the Secretary/Treasurer of the American Pediatric Society (APS) and a member of The American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Publications Committee for the American Thoracic Society (ATS), for which he chaired the Pediatric Assembly and the Research Fellowship Review Committee. He has also served as chair of the Neonatology Sub-Board for the American Board of Pediatrics and the Steering Committee for the National Institute
of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Neonatal Research Network.

Dr. Jobe has been a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Human Embryology and Development Study Section, the FDA Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee, the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development Council for the NIH, the Program Review Committee for the Pediatric Scientist Development Program (PSDP) Fellowship Program, and the Selection Committee for the E. Mead Johnson Award for Research in Pediatrics, where he also served as chair. He is a past President of the Society for Pediatric Research Council (PRC) and has organized training seminars for young pediatric faculty in Estonia, Poland, and Hungary for the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR), APS, and the European Society Pediatric Research (ESPR). Dr. Jobe was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2007.

Dr. Jobe has authored over 275 peer-reviewed articles and over 150 editorials, chapters, and other publications.

He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Pediatrics and has served as an editor for Pediatric Research.

Dr. Jobe is the recipient of the Ross Award in Research from the Western Society for Pediatric Research, the E. Mead Johnson Award for Pediatric Research, the Arvo Ylppö Medal for Pediatric Research from the Finnish Pediatric Societies, and the George Simbruner Lecturing Award at New Frontiers in Neonatology. He is committed to resident and fellowship training, and he has received numerous teaching awards.

Dr. Keszler is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. In his clinical capacity, Dr. Keszler serves as the Director of Nurseries/Inborn Neonatal Services, the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program, and the Neonatal Information System at Georgetown University Medical Center. In addition, he is the Chair of Institutional Review Board Committee B, also at Georgetown.  Dr. Keszler obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from McGill University in Montreal. He completed a pediatric residency and a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Akron, Ohio.

In 1982, Dr. Keszler joined the faculty of Georgetown University, as a Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics where he is now honored with a full professorship.  He currently serves on a dozen university and hospital committees, and has served on several National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration panels.

A member of the Advisory Board of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network of the National Institute of Child and Health Development (NICHD), he serves on the Data Safety and Monitoring Board of the NICHD Neonatal Research Network. Dr. Keszler is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the Society for Pediatric Research, and a charter member of the Steering Committee of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. He sits on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Perinatology and is an active peer reviewer for numerous journals, including Pediatrics, Acta Paediatrica, Pediatric Pulmonology, the Journal of Perinatology, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and the European Journal of Pediatrics. Additionally, he serves as an ad-hoc scientific reviewer for the NICHD Neonatal Research Network.

Dr. Keszler has published over 80 original papers, review articles, book chapters, letters to the editor, and editorials; presented over 260 lectures in national and international conferences/seminars; and moderated or conducted over 50 workshops and roundtable discussions. He has been a Visiting Professor in over 20 medical institutions in the United States and abroad. His research has focused on various conventional and unconventional means of respiratory support in the United States and abroad. More recently, he has turned his research interest to advanced techniques of conventional mechanical ventilation, noninvasive forms of respiratory support, and the adverse effects of oxygen exposure.
